hello capt.

according to setlist.net there are 9 VERSIONS of this percussion jam.... so really... this is a VERY LIMITED PROPOSITION, especially considering 3 are from egypt and 2 are "from egypt with love".

take your pick. it is what it is. perhaps the first version from 9/14 is the BEST -- as the band really makes the effort of bringing the TWO WORLDS together: the jam with the Egyptians is quite extensive and then they go into an "OK" not fade away.... too bad it is no longer on youtube..... but maybe that merrymakers guy has it up (?).

i like these:

Egypt, 9/16/78

Winterland, 10/21/78

but really, the interesting thing is the world music sort-of-effect on the dead. the renditions of Ollin Arrageed played at dead concerts, however, i find to be little more than an aside -- if you really want to get into it, check out rabih abou-khalil or anouar brahem.... among many others i'm sure.

that being said: FROM EGYPT WITH LOVE is one of my favorite Dead runs.... and i think all of the DRUMS segments following the egypt tour are CRUCIALLY INFORMED by this experience..... the FALL 78 drums are THE BOMB!
